Our focus:  Comprehensive Management of Chronic Pain

Mounir Mekhail, M.D.

We are passionate about educating and emphasizing to our patients the realistic outcomes of treatment. We provide state-of-the-art medicine, however we understand that there are limitations to modern medicine. We believe that an honest relationship and communication between the doctor and the patient can result in long term control and management of the chronic pain and suffering.

In order to achieve realistic expectations of our treatment, our patients need to understand the following two points:

1.  Chronic pain is a medical condition, just like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, etc, which unfortunately are sometimes a part of life.

2.  Physicians do not cure chronic conditions, but we do our best to reduce the suffering these conditions cause, and improve the activities of daily living.

The key to treatment success is to find the right combination of treatment modalities in the form of physical therapy, medication management, steroid injections, and other interventional pain management procedures.  Ongoing communication, and counseling between the patient and the physician is required to maximize the treatment process.

Multi Disciplinary Approach

Physical Therapy/Interventional Procedures:

Physical therapy is important for the integrity of the muscular system.  In some cases intervertebral procedures are necessary to improve the patient's condition, such as steroid injections, rhizotomy, spinal cord stimulator, and opiate pump.  In spite of all these modalities, the patient may benefit from surgery to remove the pressure on the nerves, or to stabilize the structures, and reduce irritation and inflammation.

Medication Management:

Medications are appropriate when they are safe, have minimal or no side effects, and produce a desired result such as improved function.  Medications are used as part of a comprehensive approach in the treatment of chronic pain conditions.  The right combination of medications may help control the pain, and is usually very helpful at modifying and reducing the effects of chronic pain. This may sometimes be a "trial and error" process, as we individualize each patient’s treatment plan. We strive to make sure that the medications our patients are taking are safe, and making a significant difference in their lives.

We treat patients that are suffering with these conditions:

  • Failed Surgery Pain (from the neck and back)
  • Chronic non-operable Neck and Back Pain
  • Radiculopathy (arm or leg pain from a spine problem)
  • Neuropathy Pain (pain from damaged nerves coming from trauma or disease)
  • Facet Joint Pain
  • Sacroiliac Joint Pain
  • Disc Disease
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (also known as RSD or CRPS) and other Sympathetically Maintained Pain Syndromes
  • Headaches from the Cervical Spine

Our Services for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder

You can overcome opioid use disorder, and start the path of recovery without serious disruption in your daily activities, such as work or school.  Buprenorphine containing medications such as Suboxone®, Subutex®, and Zubsolv®, are successfully used in conjunction with counseling, and lifestyle change for the treatment of opioid use disorder. They reduce the craving for opioids and provide an opportunity to modify impulsive behavior at a gentler pace. Opioid Use Disorder is an illness, and could be treated successfully by a qualified physician, in a general medical setting similar to all other illnesses, removing the stigma associated with addiction clinics.  With proper case selection, treatment in an outpatient facility reduces the cost associated with inpatient rehabilitation centers.

Medication assisted therapy along with self-motivation, counseling, and a support program is necessary to maximize your success in your journey to recovery.

Additional counseling by other professionals is required (list available upon request).
